With legendary status firmly established on the Christchurch foodie scene, BASE Woodfired Pizzas are freshly made to order, and arrive piping hot and delicious mere seconds after being cooked to perfection in their wood-fired oven. What’s more, they only use locally-sourced produce, ensuring you get a genuine taste of Canterbury with each slice. Getting the idea to start a business came about via the earthquakes, with owners Chris, Andy and Rod Thomson’s backyard wood-fired pizza oven becoming a cooking source for the neighbourhood following the quake-related power outages. The rest, as they say, is history – there’s also a little history in their Re:START container kitchen, with recycled bricks from demolished Christchurch buildings lining the walls surrounding their wood burning pizza oven, imported from Italy and kept busy daily cooking some of the city’s finest pizzas – you’ll want to try crowd favourites Sir George and Moroccan Lamb while you’re toasty in front of the wood burner heater at their table that keeps things warm over the cooler months.
